Welcome to Pathways Residence

Pathways-Pretoria, a non-profit organisation, is a centre catering for learners with special needs. Pathways Residence was recently established with the sole aim of providing independent accommodation for the young adults who attend Pathways. Parents and caregivers have come together to represent these young adults who are all ready to spread their wings.

Progess Report (updated, March 2012)

Consequently a house, with a safe and supported semi-independent living arrangement, has become a great need! At present there are seven young adults who are ready and excited to leave the nest. The house will be run by a caregiver, who will be there to facilitate the household. The young adults will cook and clean for themselves, except for those who are not capable to do so and support workers will provide the special care that is needed.

We envisage a house with a minimum of eight rooms; one for each of the young adults and one for the caregiver. We are very grateful to have recently been donated a one hectare (2.2 acre) piece of land. This will enable us to build a house which will accommodate the various special needs of the Young Adults. Due to the fact that individuals would have to be transported to and from work, a suitable vehicle is required in the form of a mini-bus or kombi as well as one or two used wheelchairs.

It is with the above in mind that we aim to involve as many individuals, corporate entities and/or other organisations as possible, to assist us with regard to building materials, or any financial assistance to enable us to complete the project.

This is but only the beginning of our dream to help young adults to leave the nest. The reality is that these committed parents and caregivers will not be here forever. What happens to their vulnerable children when they are no longer here to advocate for them? Hopefully in the future, with your help, we could empower many more special young adults who dream just as we do of independence.
